TEST DRIVE MEME: AUGUST + SEPTEMBER EDITION

Welcome to bravenewworld's test drive meme! This post is designed to help players test out their characters within the setting, as well as give them an opportunity to collect samples for their future application. The prompts below are all optional, and can be used to get a feel for the game, but we encourage players to get creative and use this post however best suits their needs. Players are welcome to use either prose or brackets for their threads.

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you. While not required, we also encourage you to take a look at the most recent AU Planning post.

THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 It’s a fishing expedition! For a limited time only, this boat full of expert Pokémon anglers will lend interested parties a Super Rod - and provide instructions free of charge. What sort of Pokémon will you reel in? Or will you end up “catching” one of your companions during casting practice?

#2 In a show of goodwill, Gigas has donated a vehicle called a “jeep” to the medics of Union to expedite their arrival on crisis scenes. But a curious young Audino has taken it for a spin - and it’s headed right for the Flower Grove! Look out!

#3 Not to be outdone by Sanctuary’s sporting events, Caldera has invented a sport called Volley-the-Ball! It’s best played on sand, while shirtless. It is hot here in the desert, after all! Pokémon are encouraged to compete on teams alongside their Trainers.

#4 The Warp Bands are experimenting with a new feature that lets you track Pokémon just by keeping an eye on the screen. This is causing traffic jams in town as everybody wanders around looking at their Warp Bands instead of where they’re going. And into the middle of the chaos ambles a little old lady with a Furfrou, trying to find the Growlithe her Warp Band claims is nearby so it can make a friend….

#5 A local restaurant has debuted an “all you can eat” buffet of PokéPuffs and Poffins, which has attracted the notice of a rogue Snorlax. It’s promptly fallen asleep, and is blocking the door to the kitchen with only 15 minutes left till closing. If somebody doesn’t wake it up soon, none of the Pokémon waiting will get to have any treats!

[Yeah, fishing lessons! Or maybe just an excuse to spend a day on a boat. She doesn't seem the most interested in fishing practiced as evidenced by the fact that she'd already handed off her fishing rod to a harried-looking Cleffa while she leans back against the railing to enjoy the sea breeze.

If her flashy style isn't enough to give her away, the black pokeballs she'd carried with her certainly marked her as Gigan. There'd been some hesitation about letting her join the trip until she'd assured the sailors that she wasn't out to actually capture any new Pokemon and in fact, had couple of aquatic Pokemon she was hoping to give a chance to stretch their legs, so to speak. The two of them, a Dratini and a Staryu are swimming alongside the boat, never quite diving or leaving their trainer's line of sight.]

You two be careful, okay? [She calls down with a grin.] You don't want to get hooked by accident!

[You might have escaped the Calderans dragging folks into this game, but they aren't the only ones looking to pull people in. Because Kirara's out there looking for a partner and what better partner than the first person she sees?

Moving quickly, she hurries over to grab said nearest person by the arm.]

You look like you'd be good at this! Come on, the game's about to start and I need a partner!

[Whether this is a somebody who's going to argue or a somebody who just can't say no to a pretty face, she's already trying to tug them along.]

Oh, come on!

[Kirara stomps her foot in front of the Snorlax after several unsuccessful attempts at budging the brute. Nobody else seems interested in getting it out of here, so why not! She frowns, looking at the cel phone in her hand before angrily stuffing it into the bag at her side and setting it down on a table.]

I don't have time for this, I have a meeting to get to and my Pokemon are hungry! [She plants both hands firmly against the Snorlax's side and begins to push with all of her might.] So get... out... of... the... way...!

[It's not budging at all. Jeez, this would never happen at home.]

[feastorfamine]

[When faced like a problem, certain people will use unconventional methods. Aila is that type of person, having gotten into the building through, well, climbing in through the restaurant's window. Luckily she'd been able to cover paying this time.

When she climbs out, holding a bag of treats, she's greeted by another girl struggling in vain to move an immovable object.]

... you know, there are easier methods than the ones you're using.

[Apparently the question of what happens when the unstoppable force meet the immovable object has just been answered. In this case, the immovable Snorlax beats the unstoppable Kirara. She's stopping for a breather when Aila jumps out of the window. She frowns a bit, preparing a retort when she notices the bag of treats she's holding. She looks from the bag to the window, back to the bag and then.] Hey, if I pay you what those snacks cost will you go back in there to get another bag for me?

[feastorfamine]

[Aila... did not expect that reaction. She stopped, looked at her bag, and then back at Kirara.]

Depends. Is there anything to make it worth my whi-

[And she stopped. People had come to her aid before... so...]

You know what, nevermind. Sure, I'll do it.

[Kirara, on the other hand, had more or less expected that initial reaction. Planned on it, really. Enough so that she doesn't seem to notice Aila's brief moment of internal struggle and ultimate decision before holding out a stack of money to her. Enough to cover hers and Aila's purchases and extra.]

Okay, great. I need a dozen poffins in a mix of dry, spicy and sweet poffins.

[feastorfamine]

[Aila didn't have much sense of money due to not having much of it, but she could tell that this was more than she needed to cover that order. A bit of embarrassment and frustration at her altruism being for nothing, she nodded nonetheless.]

Alright. I'll be back in a few minutes.

[It wasn't like there was a line, thanks to Snorlax. With a quick nod, Aila ducked back in.]

[A few minutes. More and more precious time ticking away.

But there's nothing she can do about it but wait. So she does just that, standing outside the window with her eyes glued to the clock on her phone and one hand on her hip. Tapping her foot impatiently.]

[It doesn't take long for Aila to return. This was supposed to be "all you can eat", so there's plenty already prepared. Honestly, what took most of her time was getting someone to help her pick out the right kind.

In any case, she returned with time to spare, crawling out the window with a second bag.]

Alright, here you go.

[Ah, finally! Kirara turns quickly to take the bag from Aila and smiling when she finds just what she'd asked for inside.]

Thanks a bunch, you're a lifesaver. [Into the larger bag at her side go the treats.] Keep the change, okay?

...Partner?

[ Veronica is more surprised (and a bit arch) than anything else, not having expected an ambush while on her one day off. The Noibat nestled in her beach hat, however, starts laughing like this is the funniest thing she's ever heard. Partners with you! This kid really must be a stranger if she doesn't know any better, Veronica! ] Noinoinoi~!

[ It seems this woman already has a partner, Kirara. And said partner is a bit, uh

a-noi-ing. ]

I don't have a paid so you'll just have to deal with icons in the comment so HA

[She doesn't pay much mind to the laughing Noibat. She's heard all about the weird attitude that Union people have about their Pokemon so letting them sit on your hat and make a bunch of noise is probably just normal around here.] For the game. [She gestures toward the net set up with the soon-to-be opposing team waiting.] They said I need to find another player, and you're not too busy right now, are you?

[ Veronica observes the preparations at the net. A game? It's a bit childish, but...

Nemesis the Noibat is making unhelpful comments like UNLEASH THE EXPLOSIVE SADIST OF THE DEAD, so Veronica waits until the chittering dies down before replying. ] ...I suppose not.

[ Day off. She can afford this on her day off.

To business, then. She takes in the net keenly, snapping more into a businesslike mode. ] What are the rules?

[Kirara seems quite pleased at the woman agreeing to join in. Or she would, if that wasn't a give-in right from the beginning. At least in her own mind.

She release Veronica's arm, stepping onto the other side of the sandy court.]

It's easy. All you have to do is hit the ball over the net and try to make the other team miss.

[blastruler]

Any restrictions on strategy?

[ Asked more for Nemesis's sake than her own, as while the woman discards her hat on a chair near the net before taking her place alongside Kirara, the Noibat dismounts to flutter behind her. Veronica's eyes continue to flick across the field, assessing the state of the sand, the size of the play area, the condition of the opponents.

Nemesis giggles. Into it already! ] Noooooi.

Just stay in the lines, right?

[She gives a questioning glance toward the opposing team who nod affirmingly.]

See? That's all there is to it. Easy, right?

[blastruler]

Perhaps deceptively so.

[ Where's the ball? Oh, there. On the other side of the net. Veronica hangs back to one side of the "court", Nemesis continuing to hover over her shoulder. ] Whenever you're ready.

Ready!

[She nods with a grin, settling into a prepared stance as the first volley comes in. If Veronica has a sneaky plan, now's the time!]

Might need a bit more oomph than that, Skitty.

[ Don't turn around unless you've got those designer sunglasses on, Kirara. You just might be blinded by the backlit pastels. Or hit in the eye with a rose petal.

In fact, it's not till the illusionary crooning fades that anyone witnessing Haruka Tenoh's advent to this scene might even notice that she's on crutches. An equally sparkly Rhyhorn watches from outside, shaking its head and snorting. ]

Screw it, I bought a paid.

[That might be an understatement. With one last mighty shove, Kirara stumbles back a few steps and leans forward to catch her breath. She's going to need a new approach here, and she's in the midst of thinking of one when she's suddenly blasted by a sudden blinding light that couldn't be stopped even by her fancy shades even if she were to commit the sin of wearing sunglasses indoors.

She turns, staring at the remarkably handsome stranger who somehow manages to even make crutches look good. She stares, wide-eyed for a moment, before her eyes flicker past to the Rhyhorn outside. Idea!]

Hey, is that your Rhyhorn outside? Can I borrow it for a minute?

[She's Gigan. She doesn't have time to spend all day being lovestruck.]

[actsmagnificent]

[ Haruka blinks, thinking she must have heard wrong. Such a question simply is not asked. Not of anyone, and certainly not of Haruka Tenoh. ] She won't fit through the door...

[ Because unless you were hoping to nudge that Snorlax aside with Brilliance's horn, she's really at a loss for what's going on here. ]

[Forgive her, she hasn't fully absorbed all these Union customs yet. Both in regards to borrowing a Pokemon and more specifically in regards to not asking the glorious Haruka Tenoh.]

What do you mean it won't fit? Just- [she stops, catching on to the problem quick] oh, right, you don't use them here.

[Frustrated, she shoots a look back at the Snorlax and then goes for her phone again to check the time, looking ever more distressed at what she sees there.]

What am I supposed to do now? I'm seriously starting to run late but I can't not feed my Pokemon.

[Her schedule is in peril!]

[actsmagnificent]

[ That is a problem! Haruka considers this and then swings herself on in, having gotten the hang of her crutches a while back. ] Stand back.

[ Okay. Snorlax. Snorlax are creatures of instinct, right? They sleep when and where they want to sleep. What's more, they eat where and when they want to eat. And Haruka lives at a Theater with a very hardy Berry tree in the courtyard.

Producing a Sitrus Berry from her pocket, she tosses it up and down a few times before looking around at the crowd. ] Does anyone have a knife?

Eh? [She doesn't really get it, but she's all out of ideas so it looks like she doesn't have any choice but to be everything on this mysterious stranger's plan. Grabbing her bag, she steps back out of the way and blinks when Haruka reveals the berry. Even as a blushing waitress make her way over to offer a knife.]

What's a berry going to do? It's sleeping, not eating. [Admittedly, her knowledge about Pokemon outside of what moves are best used in a Contest. She can't help but check the time again, horrified to see that another whole minute has passed! Hurry, Haruka!]

[ Haruka just grins. She's in no particular hurry, from the smooth and easy motions she's making, but when she accepts that knife with a smile she immediately begins peeling the skin off the Berry. It spirals off in an unbroken strip; once she has it peeled, she slices the Berry neatly in half. Juice slips out.

So does the smell of fresh Berry.

Leaning on the crutch that's supporting her non-broken side, Haruka leans up and wafts that fresh, delicious-smelling, perfectly-prepared Berry in front of Snorlax's face. Guess what, buddy. There's food here. Fresh food. Good food.

Food....for you. ] Naptime's over.

[Haruka's lack of rush is pretty apparent, and seriously contrasting Kirara who looks like she's nearly about to jump out of her positively adorable shoes. This is ridiculous, she's late and this person is peeling a berry! No matter how good-looking somebody is, this can't stand.]

Okay, look, I don't know what you're trying to do but-- yee! [She jumps with a startled squeak as the massive bulk of the Snorlax behind her suddenly bolts straight upright, snapping from deep sleep to alertness in a flash. All she can do is stare as the huge Pokemon reaches its arms out and lumbers toward that sweet berry goodness with a "Snooooooooooor!"]
