TEST DRIVE MEME: FEBRUARY + MARCH EDITION

Welcome to

bravenewworld's test drive meme! This post is designed to help players test out their characters within the setting, as well as give them an opportunity to collect samples for their future application. The prompts below are all optional, and can be used to get a feel for the game, but we encourage players to get creative and use this post however best suits their needs. Players are welcome to use either prose or brackets for their threads.

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you. While not required, we also encourage you to take a look at the most recent AU Planning post.

THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 After the events in Union, the settlement of Refuge has decided to make the Shattering a more public affair. People who were impacted by the tragedies that befell the city, or those who wish to pay respects to a lost family member are encouraged to either send a Litwick off into the caves, or go off to find one. Who knows, you may find something out about yourself--or about the others around you.

#2 The Medical Center in Union is in need of volunteers, and has sent out a call. But it's not because of what you might think. The weather has been surprisingly warm this time of year, and because of it, a number of Pokémon have decided to, um, fix the population discrepancy that the Elite Four's attack has caused. Baby 'mon have overrun the Breeding Center, and many have found their way at the Medical Center for overflow. There are going to be a lot of diapers that need changing...

#3 With the warm weather hinting at a full return, flocks of Pokémon have begun their northern migration back into the Verdant Forest and beyond. Unfortunately, a few of the wild Flying-type breeds are less than respectful of old monuments, and the Lake and Forest Shrine have received a few unwanted guests making a mess. Shooing them off only seems to anger them, and the Shrines are filthy as a result of their visit. Ugh, will these rude Pokémon ever leave?!

#4 After the attack from the Elite Four, help has been filtering in from all parts of the known world. As a result, a number of temporary food carts have opened up in the business district of Union. Workers have to eat, right? This is a perfect time to expand your palette, but be warned, some of the delicacies can be a bit... eclectic, we'll say. Eat at your own risk.

I came here from Caldera. There's not much of a music industry there, and I know there are a lot of opportunities for up and coming singers here!

I just came from there, too. [ With her job done, Stella trills softly. Kanade reaches to pick her up, holding the little Pokémon carefully against her middle. ] But I was just visiting.

You like music?

There are a lot of people here from Caldera, it seems.

[ At least enough that selling Calderan food might be a big hit - although it seems popular enough here in general. ]

I love music though! [ And her Azurill hums a tune with a full mouth. ]

I want to try to make a living singing, if I can. ...I haven't made enough progress to keep from eating up my savings so far though.

At first I thought they were difficult to get along with.

[ Brash, hotheaded, loud. Still, this is a happy story. ]

But thanks to them, Union was saved.

[ Kanade kicks scuffs her heel at the ground, leaning against one of the ribbon-wrapped posts of her food stand. ]

I love music too. Making a living off it seems tough, but I'm sure if you love it enough...

A lot of them can be... like that.

[ Example: her bro. Sometimes Ranka wonders if that alone isn't evidence that she was born elsewhere. ]

I do. And I'd love to... sing or play with you sometime too, but right now I need to get a part-time job if I want to eat! So I actually really appreciate the free snack...

[ That her Azurill is getting more than its fair share of. ]

[ Kanade blinks, playing with her Cleffa's ears idly. ]

Well, I suppose it's true that love alone won't fill your stomach. When was the last time you had a real meal?

I-I haven't been hungry, but singing on street corners is... um, kind of an embarrassing way to not make enough money anyways.

[ Although she's been eating cheap. Very cheap. ]

...I have some experience waiting tables though. People always need waitresses, right?

Hmm. [ Kanade hums thoughtfully. In her arms, Stella trills along for a moment. ] I can see why you came to Union, but there are much better places than street corners to chase after a dream.

[ She smiles. ]

I wonder...

Yeaaah it's not very dreamy.

[ She's got some advertising work lined up, but it's not enough just yet. She leans in when Kanade continues, looking into her eyes. ]

You're thinking something. Something about helping me.

[ Kanade locks eyes with her, shuffling her Cleffa to one arm and raising a finger enterprisingly. As if they're both in on some grand conspiracy. ]

I am!

[ Swinging her free arm out, she points in the direction of a rather large building that appears to be a food establishment of some sort. ]

Do you know what that building is?

[ Ranka shakes her head. Nope. She does not know. Her Azurill, finished eating, starts to clamber down her front, and she holds her arms close to her body, letting him rest against her as she waits. ]

No, I don't have any idea, but you do, don't you?

Right again! That... [ She makes a sweeping gesture, because Kanade does have a flair for the dramatic. ] ...is my family's restaurant. It's called The Lucky Spoon, it's very well known.

How are you with lunch rushes, hmm?

Ooooh!

[ Ranka follows that gesture. It looks nice? It looks really nice! ]

They're not half as bad as a room full of baby Pokemon! I've got tons of energy for 'em!

[ Kanade starts giggling. ]

Really, I'd think you could handle everything after that!

[ Shaking her head, she mellows down again. ]

The truth is, it's a bakery. My family was going to open up an actual restaurant before all those things happened with the Elite Four. Now it looks like our plans will be affected for a while.

But, you know. If we took on help, I wouldn't have to do everything at the Lucky Spoon myself.

[ Giving her more time to figure out what to do, exactly. ]

Right? [ Kanade's laughter gets a matching giggle fit from Ranka. ]

It looks like... a lot of things aren't going the way people expected them to go. But this sounds really, actually really good. I need work, and you need help - assuming your family's alright with it.

Papa and Mama will be fine! It's just like you said. Everyone has to adjust. But I think helping one another right now is important.

[ Apparently in agreement, Stella nods fervently. ]

See? Even your new co-worker agrees.

[ Oh look, there's an Azurill leaping through the air to tackle-hug Stella hopefully that's alright. ]

So does this new employee, apparently... a-anyways, um, thank you so much, you really don't know how much it means to me.

[ Stella responds with a happy squeak, wiggling her arms. They're too stubby to give a proper hug, but she does her best! ]

Looks like I'll need to put in for two aprons instead of just one.

[ Kanade gently pats the Azurill's head. ]

Say, what's your name?

[ It's the effort that matters with hugs! Especially with tiny fairy pokemon that barely have limbs. ]

I hope they're cute...

[ The little blue fairy lets out a squeak, clearly pleased. ]

That's Bobby.

[ Then they both get A+ for enthusiasm! ]

Don't you worry, they're plenty cute!

[ Shifting the rambunctious bundle of baby Pokémon over to one arm, Kanade goes to hold her hand out. ]

This one is Stella. And I'm Kanade.

I'm Ranka! Ranka Lee! I'm happy to meet you, Kanade and Stella!

[ Bobby scampers up Ranka's arm as she holds her hand out, but there's some very clear charisma, an almost practiced cadence and aura of cute, as Ranka introduces herself. ]
