TEST DRIVE MEME: JUNE + JULY EDITION

Welcome to bravenewworld's test drive meme! This post is designed to help players test out their characters within the setting, as well as give them an opportunity to collect samples for their future application. The prompts below are all optional, and can be used to get a feel for the game, but we encourage players to get creative and use this post however best suits their needs. Players are encouraged to use either first person or third person for their threads.

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you.

THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 Refuge has opened its gates to the people of Union, Caldera and Citadel, in the most hospitable way they feel possible: A party. Some have come to explore the expansive underground city, but mostly, word has spread about how Refuge's brews are on point. They don't seem to discriminate on age, either.

#2 The city of Caldera is starting a major production project and they need workers. The forges are constantly going day and night and the pay's good, but it's hot, hard work that'll leave you tired and achy to say the least.

#3 The Summer Solstice festival has begun in Citadel. The tree is in full bloom, with flowers of every color dot its branches. This week-long celebration brings together the various tribes that call Citadel its home through music, dancing and, of course, fighting. There is a tournament set to begin, boasting some of the strongest Valkyries that Citadel has ever known among the combatants.

#4 The heat has really gotten to the people of Union, and as a result many have moved south for a weekend get-away in the Archipelago and the larger Island. The sand is warm and the water is too, but doesn't the beach seem a bit crowded for a once seemingly deserted area?

You think so? [Never thought of that. Maybe part of him likes the trouble, too.] Things have been... difficult lately, but maybe... I could find some time. [He found time for this, didn't he?]

It's too hot to do anything else, I think. Maybe the crowd'll thin when the sun goes down...

You're not getting a rock. I'm not gonna let you take a rock back to Union. [ maybe he can't cheer an adult up with a handful of snow to the face, but he can at least fix this. and maybe it will make this guy less... whatever he is. ] We're looking for something cool.

It's not really... that important, is it? [It's just a, well, it's for work. Right?] And hold on a second, I never--

[Whatever 'he never' is lost to the poliwag bouncing on his shoulder. Guess somebody's gotten a bit excited.]

[An underground city was not something Blaike had ever heard of before until recently. Of course, he was obligated to investigate.

...although the mention of their brews likely had something to do with that.

So there he is, seated off to the side with a couple of empty flagons already scattered about on the table. Nothing quite like drinking one's worries and pain away.]

Ahh, now this is some wonderful stuff. [He seems to be musing more to himself than anyone else.]

[The heat really had gotten almost unbearable. After receiving permission to travel to the archipelago, Blaike found himself standing on the beach, the waves lapping at the toes of his boots.

Unfortunately, there were too many other people around. At least in his opinion. This was supposed to be a break for him to relax and cool down. Anyone from Union has likely seen him around the new Enhanced establishment or hanging out around one of the bars.

Should anyone approach him, they'll just get a look.]

Your friend seems like she's up for a little search expedition too, so I guess it's three against one! Come on, it'll be fun.

( she can't believe she's lost him. again.

one may spot a rather frantic-seeming young woman clad entirely in long black clothes despite the heat - and, if you look closely enough, her left arm ends in what seems more like metal claws than a hand... she's evidently not enjoying the festives! what a shame. looking for something? someone? in fact, she might be heading your way right now. )

( relaxing is a strange concept. downtime is a strange concept. Lan Fan isn't sure what to do with herself at the beach, but at least she's not currently all in black (but certainly not in a swimsuit either). still, she's hanging back, sticking to the shade and mostly just watching what other people are doing. for once, she's not wearing her prosthetic, so the left sleeve of her t-shirt is empty. her nincada friend can be seen skittering about. )

3. So where do you wanna go first? [Wow, look at all the flowers! They're so colorful!] There's gotta be something fun we can do around here... [Looks like the hoppip's idea of fun is messing with some of the musicians, though. Mamimi's too busy looking at the conga line forming to really notice.]

[Festivals are so much fun! He was in Caldera for the last summer solstice so it seems only fair that he's in Citadel this year.

There's a Fletchinder perched on his shoulder and a... small round red thing rolling after him that might be a Darumaka.]

Oh! [Yes hello person with a bird and a rolly thing.] I think my Hoppip wanted to go exploring by himself for a bit.

[She'll figure out where he went eventually. She always does. Well. She tries.]

[She doesn't look worried, but it's worth checking!]

Well, he'll probably turn up sooner or later. He always does!

[The rolly thing is now rolling around them. At least he's having fun?]

So have you been to Citadel before?

Not really, no. I mean, I wander off a lot, too.

[Not the least bit apologetic or sheepish about it either.]

And I have, actually! But never for the solstice.

Sometimes it's nice when you don't know where you're going.

[She's just getting used to it, but it's pretty great so far.]

Oh, you mean it's not always like this? [Who knew!] What happens to all the leaves when summer's over, do you know?

I don't really have much of a choice, do I? I mean, if it's all... decided, anyway.

[Before he gets morose, though, he'll start looking for a more worthwhile memento. Whatever it might be.]

Well, there's less flowers usually! And the leaves all change color in fall. I think they probably fall off in winter, but I haven't been around to check yet.

[ why did he come here, why did he think this was a good idea, the beach sucks, it sucks and he's dying.

except he knows perfectly well why he came here. he came because everyone else was coming, because it was supposed to be fun, and he hadn't wanted to be left behind. if it meant having company, having people to play with, then he was perfectly willing to put himself through the horrid discomfort of heat and humidity. but at the moment, he is regretting the decision. other people are enjoying the sand, the water, the sun - and he's stuck wandering around in the shade while Flabébé scolds him for being out in the heat like this. he's shirtless and almost glowing for how pale his skin is, the Moon Man's pendant still hanging around his neck.

and then he spots a familiar face in the shade, and all his gloom just dissipates.

predictably, Lan Fan gets a snowball to the back of the head for her troubles. Jack looks entirely too happy about this. ]

Yo, Lan Fan! Taking a break from babysitting duty?

[blackflamed]

I don't know. Sometimes there's little dots on the map you follow instead.

[Huh. Well. That makes sense.]

We could come back in winter and find out, right?

[imprudens]

[She answered his rethorical question! That's kind of cute.]

We could! Maybe they have another festival at the winter solstice.

( she almost dodges the snowball. almost. and she immediately whips around and glares at Jack, because of course she does. )

It isn't babysitting.

( it's serious business, okay. this sentence is practically a kneejerk reaction by now. )

I was asked to come along, but... ( her shoulders sink. she shakes her head. )

I'm not sure what I expected. ( look at all those people just... people-ing. )

From the beach? Well, I'm not sure what you expected either...

[ the rest of his sentence gets put on hold for a moment as he comes to stand by her, trying to move as lightly as possible over the sand and making faces of discomfort about it - sand is awful and too warm, why do people even like this. he chills the sand under his feet while he people-watches with her. although there is a brief drop in temperature in the air around him, too, it's quickly swallowed up by the heat.

as for what he was saying: ] But from what I hear, it's supposed to be fun.

I was told the same thing.

( she shrugs, grateful for the brief respite from the heat, even if it comes back full force almost immediately. )
