The civilization depicted in the paintings that Maya and Jinxie found in the Ruins is either a precursor civilization to Gigas or Gigas itself. The three slab-like figures depicted being chained by the people are Regice, Regirock, and Registeel, with Regigigas being the larger figure that created the landmass the people are living on. It was said at one point that Gigas was named for a benevolent Pokemon that protected their city during the cataclysm, so I'm figuring that's the one they had as their patron.

The original cataclysm/god war thing started when some genius decided to catch Arceus.

Oh also Mega Evolution isn't ever going to be introduced in this game we're just going to let you guys think you can have it until the very end at which point the game instantly ends as soon as someone touches a Mega Gem for the first time.
