TEST DRIVE MEME: JUNE + JULY EDITION

Welcome to

bravenewworld's test drive meme! This post is designed to help players test out their characters within the setting, as well as give them an opportunity to collect samples for their future application. The prompts below are all optional, and can be used to get a feel for the game, but we encourage players to get creative and use this post however best suits their needs. Players are encouraged to use either first person or third person for their threads.

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you.

THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 Refuge has opened its gates to the people of Union, Caldera and Citadel, in the most hospitable way they feel possible: A party. Some have come to explore the expansive underground city, but mostly, word has spread about how Refuge's brews are on point. They don't seem to discriminate on age, either.

#2 The city of Caldera is starting a major production project and they need workers. The forges are constantly going day and night and the pay's good, but it's hot, hard work that'll leave you tired and achy to say the least.

#3 The Summer Solstice festival has begun in Citadel. The tree is in full bloom, with flowers of every color dot its branches. This week-long celebration brings together the various tribes that call Citadel its home through music, dancing and, of course, fighting. There is a tournament set to begin, boasting some of the strongest Valkyries that Citadel has ever known among the combatants.

#4 The heat has really gotten to the people of Union, and as a result many have moved south for a weekend get-away in the Archipelago and the larger Island. The sand is warm and the water is too, but doesn't the beach seem a bit crowded for a once seemingly deserted area?

Karp, karp. Karp, karp.

[ There is something wiggling along the beach - wiggling, and gasping for air. This Pokémon is trying to find the ocean and failing.

With a mighty wrench of her pathetic body, the intrepid Magikarp launches herself into the air - and flops sideways on Tieria's feet, where she continues to wiggle around. So much for that. ] Karp, karp.

[His eyes widened in surprise. He'd heard the Magikarp coming and was curious to see if it would actually get to the water, but it apparently used Splash to land on his feet instead.

Nothing happened.

He sighed, putting the book to the side.]

How did you get up here...?

[Though, he mostly muttered that to himself, not expecting the Pokémon to actually respond with intelligible language. Couldn't very well let it flop around there at his feet and potentially die. He stood up and carefully lifted the rather large fish, surprisingly strong for someone his size, and started for the water.

Behind him, the Solosis bobbed along, floating with them, while the Riolu stayed put rather obediently.]

Karp, karp. [ Tieria will get no answers out of this Magikarp. Its behavior once picked up is exactly the same as its behavior on the sand - flopping and karping.

Meanwhile, someone in a heavy cloak is wandering down the beach. Shoot. She drifts off for one second - ] Oktavia? Oktavi--- aah!!

[ There's a gust of wind, and the hood of the stranger's cloak flies off. She scrambles to replace it, but not before the sunlight catches on metallic scales and warms up a pair of fins on either side of her head. ]

[Flopping... and it was a slimy fish. It was hard to keep his grip, but he managed to wrangle it close enough, at least, that when it finally flopped itself free, it would only take a few more flops to reach the water.

Tieria sighed and wiped at his forehead, watching it for a moment.]

Sooooo...

[The Solosis, though, turned to face the newcomer. After a moment, so did Tieria.]

Lo. Lo sis.

Mm.

[Tieria didn't seem to verbally communicate with the other Pokémon, but he did seem to understand what it was saying. He nodded, pulling his glasses down slightly to look over them at the girl for a moment, and then sliding them back up into place.]

Is this your Magikarp?

Ah - sorry -

[ The figure hurries over to fetch her fish, but Oktavia the Magikarp has managed to get back into the shallows. Where she flops just the same as she did on land. ] I'll get her feeling better right away.

[ So she wades into the water to help the fish find some water that's actually, uh, swimmable. That was almost really bad. What if something'd happened?

Even though a Magikarp can't do anything... ]

[It could tackle... if it learned how.]

She was quite far from the water.

[Tieria's tone wasn't scolding. In fact, it wasn't much of anything, coming out rather flat and emotionless at the moment. Like... this wasn't his problem.]

She was looking for me.

[ Now that Oktavia is back in the water, and her own back is turned towards this person, the figure's tone isn't that different from Tieria's. ] Because all I do is cause people trouble. Sorry you had to deal with that.

[ Can't even take her Magikarp to the beach without hurting it? That's a low even she hadn't realized she'd sunken to, and her self-worth has taken quite a few hits of late. ]

[He raised an eyebrow. If the girl was looking for someone to feel bad for her, she'd come to the wrong person. Tieria was the last person to join a pity party. At least, at this moment, he was. He'd been the source of them a few times himself, but he wasn't good at being comforting or consoling people beyond maybe bringing them a hot beverage... especially complete strangers.]

It was no trouble. Pokémon are attached to their trainers. I would hardly consider that trouble.

[He didn't know what to think of her comment, really. Why would she want to cause trouble to everyone? He mentally shrugged.]

If she were to evolve, she could handle being on land.

[Just a thought. He turned, intending to go back to his spot.]

Evolve.

[ The girl laughs, kind of bitter. Evolving's when you change, right? Must be nice for Pokémon. They know what they're going to change into.

As opposed to, say, people who sign up for their government's program "enhancing" humans with Pokémon powers. Who may think they're going to open a new world for humanity and save all kinds of people whose bodies would benefit from being infused with self-healing abilities, who think they're going to take a stand for justice and righteousness, and end up half-fish freaks who aren't even that strong in fights in the first place.

Hypothetically. ]

You're a pretty good guy.

[ But she doesn't seem like she'd mind if he went back to what he was doing - she'd caused him trouble, after all - so she kneels to watch Oktavia swim around in the water. Oktavia ends up swimming in a circle, looking confused.

Her dumb Magikarp can't even swim. ]

[That would be a first, calling him a good guy. Grumpy. Irritable. Strict. Serious. All those, sure. But good?

He stared at her.]

A Magikarp is capable of evolution. I was not joking.

[Her laugh had confused him slightly. It didn't seem like a mirthful topic.]

That'll be nice for her, then. [ Her cloak is getting waterlogged, but she doesn't seem to care. It sticks to her on one side and billows out on the other. Oktavia swims into it, then looks around. Why can't she see? ] She might even be useful to somebody someday.

Something tells me that she likes you.

[Tieria could pick up on these things. After all, if the Pokemon had climbed its way out of the water to go looking for this girl, then there was a reason for that.]

She's not very bright. [ So it's hard to say, really. Or maybe that's the reason she likes her Trainer.

Oktavia herself grows more concerned about her dilemma. Why can't she see? Why can't she move?

Perhaps she thinks such things. Or perhaps she just uses Splash because she feels like it. ] Karp, karp. Karp, karp.

That does not make her any less of a judge in character.

[ Unwilling to watch her Magikarp embarrass itself anymore (or maybe just looking for something to do), the girl lifts her cloak up out of the water, freeing Oktavia. The hem drips everywhere, and the fish is so surprised at being free that it ends up turning a somersault. ] And you are?

[ She sounds like she's only half listening. ]

Tieria Erde. You?

[Since she'd started introductions.]
