TEST DRIVE MEME: AUGUST + SEPTEMBER EDITION

Welcome to

bravenewworld's test drive meme! This post is designed to help players test out their characters within the setting, as well as give them an opportunity to collect samples for their future application. The prompts below are all optional, and can be used to get a feel for the game, but we encourage players to get creative and use this post however best suits their needs. Players are encouraged to use either first person or third person for their threads.

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you.

THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 With a sudden interest in the inner workings of Sanctuary, the mage city has decided to host a cultural festival. Taking place over an entire week, events include exciting magic duels, extravagant tea parties, and a "mouth watering" feast of delicacies from the middle and upper class. These include such things as a curious-looking sausage, an interesting-smelling dish made with Stunfisk, and a number of boiled foods! Delicious!

#2 Wingull and Pelipper have taken up residency in the port! Loud, obnoxious and somewhat destructive, they have been creating issues for Union fishermen, creating a shortage of seafood in the city. The Council have reached out to a few, ahem, adventurous types willing to chase them off. It's a messy job, but someone has to do it! Don't wear anything you want to wear again!

#3 In a show of good will, Caldera invites the citizens of Refuge to experience a self-proclaimed "true summer." Extending the invitation to the people of Union and Citadel, the food flows freely--as does the Refuge-brewed alcohol. Things are bound to get rowdy, but what is a good party without a bit of exercise and entertainment?

#4 The herds in Citadel are growing! Miltank, Tauros and Bouffalant herd sizes are at an all time high this year in part due to the assistance from other civilizations and the unusually warm spring. Farmers and herders around the area are looking for workers, and will pay in milk, meat and hides. This work is not for the faint of heart, however, and may prove to be a bit ~~crappy~~ difficult.

[....it was a terribly odd sight, to say the least. Naoto, busy taking care of her private affairs in the city that afternoon, stopped in curiosity when she had heard word of a new textiles shop opening in Union. She had expected some sort of quaint boutique when she heard that and, although she didn't particularly have any need for anything, was curious enough to investigate.

But, the sight of the gruff young man decked out in the starched fabrics and lace of a noble family's waitstaff barking at passers by to come in was enough to throw her off her guard.

She stopped. It was...quite odd. He towered over her even with her platformed boots, and the get up he was wearing was more suited for someone decidedly more feminine than she was.

Despite herself, her professionalism, and what she understood of manners, it was all she could do to stifle a giggle behind a hand.]

[His expression soured at the other teen's behavior. Being laughed at was nothing new but it didn't mean he liked it one bit. His grey eyes narrowed dangerously, Xin the Pancham leaning from around his legs with an equally dark look.]

You see something funny?

I wouldn't really call it 'funny' [Naoto said, offering the young man a sheepish smile.] The word I'd actually use is 'cute', but I wonder if that's something you'd appreciate.

[Kanji hadn't been expecting the sultry voice from his audience and it does something to him that was best not talked about in polite company. Or ever, if he had anything to say about it.

Plus, the blush on the other teen's fa e is charming. ~~But no one else was talking about that. Got it?~~]

Nothing wrong with cute. [That wasn't what she was saying, Kanji...] This is just a sample of the wares inside. [Too bad he still sounded a mite defensive.]

[Defensive or not, the responce worked well enough. Naoto was oblivious to the young man's inner turmoil, instead finding herself growing more intrigued by this little shop that had popped up in town.]

They're fantastically crafted, too, [she said, leaning in to look at a particularly intricate bit of lace.] Do you mind showing me the rest?

[As the stranger got nearer to him to look at the apron better, Kanji's face turned a bright red and after a few uncomfortable seconds backed away. What was this guy's deal?]

Th-thanks. Yeah, there's more inside. Lots of different stuff. Whatever you're lookin' for, we can do it.

[Naoto looked at him quizzically when he backed away, flushing a red that was so brilliant that he looked like he had been burned by the Calderan sun.]

There's no need to rush, [she said carefully, wondering if he had fallen ill.] But I wouldn't mind a quick tour if it's a good time for you.

[Kanji was perfectly healthy, okay, buddy! He just wasn't used to other people getting so close without permission!]

Tour's fine. The shop's not all that big, but what're you interested in? It's easier to start with a general idea.

[Personal boundaries? What were they? When off the job, Naoto was oddly dense and awkward in informal situations.]

...I'm interested in practical items, [she said after a moment,] and perhaps something to stay warm with when the winter comes. What do you have?

[Back. Off. Kanji knows that decking someone is totally bad for business but now he's so uncomfortable that he can't figure out what to do with any part of his body or thoughts. Luckily, Xin rescues them both from the stranger by getting a up in - between them and growling. Fiercely.

Kanji grabs the Pancham and looks at him. The response is an offering of his bamboo leaf.]

I don't want that. Behave or you'll be helping Ma in the back for the rest of the day.

[He turns his attention back on the potential customer, mostly recovered except for a faint blush.]

Well, most of our winter wear is made from Mareep wool. It's the warmest oou there and very comfortable. We're takin' orders for the Union-style coats, but we have outer robes that the mages in Sanctuary favored in-stock. Come in and I'll show you.

[Naoto visibly took a step back when the Pancham snarled for unknown reasons at her, familiar with both that particular species and her own weaknesses regarding Fighting types. If a fight were to break out, even if it was needless, it was obvious that she would be the loser in that one.]

Those sound like good products, [she said absently, falling the young man inside,]

...why was your friend so upset? It's like he's never seen anyone from Caldera before.

[Xin rests comfortably on Kanji's shoulder, not a trace of hostility to be seen. The boy just acts as if it's normal (which it is for them) and ignores the Pancham.]

We try to offer a wide variety. Did back home too. No reason to narrow our selection down now that we moved.

[He looks over his unoccupied shoulder, a little stunned at the question.]

It ain't about you being Calderan. He just doesn't like it when people get too close to me. Neither of us're used to it.

[Naoto looked up at him, curiousity in her eyes as she regarded both the young man and the Pancham.]

It's a little hard to avoid being close to people in a city. Where did you come from?

[Well, that's not really what he meant at all. Guess he'll have to be as blunt as this dude is.]

From Sanctuary. Not too many people wanted to really get tangled with me, since I'm not a mage like them. But I said too close. You ever heard of personal space?

[Blushing in embarrassment now, Naoto took a step back.]

Apologies. Caldera is a well populated place too, but the culture there is quite different from both Union and Sanctuary.
