TEST DRIVE MEME: JUNE + JULY EDITION

Welcome to

bravenewworld's test drive meme! This post is designed to help players test out their characters within the setting, as well as give them an opportunity to collect samples for their future application. The prompts below are all optional, and can be used to get a feel for the game, but we encourage players to get creative and use this post however best suits their needs. Players are welcome to use either prose or brackets for their threads.

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you. While not required, we also encourage you to take a look at the most recent AU Planning post.

THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 Summer means it's time for a vacation! You and your Pokémon have hit the beach only to discover that not only has everyone else had the exact same idea, there's a bullying Raichu and Snubbull wandering around stepping on people's sandcastles! Will you stand up to them or let the squabble pass you by?

#2 A Noctowl has delivered you a message inviting you to enroll in Sanctuary's "Spoinkwarts School of Magecraft". How will you respond? If you say yes, you'd better head there for your supplies....it's doubtful you're able to buy cauldrons and Swellow-feather quills in Union.

#3 Perhaps it's time to beat the heat by heading to Refuge. But you've ventured there as evening is falling, and that can only mean one things: Zubats. Zubats everywhere. All at once. Suddenly. There is no escape, there is no release. There is only Zubat, and this cave.

#4 Aggron from the northern mountains have discovered Glacier music and are trying it out for themselves! Unfortunately, the only parts they've mastered are the grunting, yelling, and whipping their heads (and tails) around violently. Enjoy the concert!

#5 The Verdant Forest is full of pollen this time of year! And it looks like this Petilil that won't stop following you is allergic to....itself. It's also giving off pollen. Everywhere. Seriously, even if you don't have allergies, you're in trouble.

#6 Wildcard! Come up with your own prompt!

[ ...Well, that's one way of handling this.

Somebody was headed out the same time Pidge was headed in. One long arm's raised to block bats from hitting her, but aside from that Haruka doesn't look overly bothered.

She also has to sidestep to avoid a collision, waiting until the last possible second to move. ] Is it really that bad...

[ She's moving with the current, you see. Different experience. ]

Whooaaa, there~

[The Magnemite slowed to a stop at her cue and the girl dropped off, landing easily on her feet. With her hood secured so tightly around her head that only her glasses shown in the fading light, Pidge looked up at the stately figure and grinned like a mareepish little kid.]

I dunno, but it's more fun like this!

[ Haruka adjusts the arm she's holding up so it's now keeping the Zubat swarm from whacking the other person instead of her. But she still isn't whacked with bats. Somehow, they all know better than to collide with Haruka Tenoh.

Skillz.

She seems interested in this answer, adopting the sort of expression one might find running into a fun new acquaintance in the park, not in a cave surrounded by swarming animals. ] What brings you into the caves?

[Mad skillz. Call the smol nerd jealous-- pity, she knows not the power of being a Shiny Human.]

Just exploring-- and doing some business. Nothing that special.

I think the better question is, what's a person dressed as nice as you is doing down in this mudhole?

I can't visit a neighboring city?

[ Haruka blinks as if this is news to her. Amusing, interesting news.

Not mad, just surprised. You learn something new every day! ]

Well, no. I'm not saying you can't, I'm just...

[She trailed, glancing the wonderfully cool and composed figure up and down.]

...Surprised you're not covered in mud. That's a neat talent.

[ Haruka shrugs - she doesn't think it's that exceptional - and then starts moving off to the side so they won't block traffic for the Zubat. ] You've brought a good partner with you today. Smart.

[ And Magnemite gets a grin. You're a good sport, supporting your Trainer by letting them live the way they want. ]

Who, Rover? Thanks!

[Pidge grinned again, and the Magnemite seemed to faintly glow in what could be interpreted as a bashful blush. Please, human. You're far too kind-- this little one is way too curious for her own good!]

We've been working together for a while. Scout too, [She added, and the little Emolga popped her head out as if on cue.

The stranger now gets a curious look, however.]

Seems like you came alone, though. How have you managed to avoid all these Zubats?

[ No matter how many times you ask for her secrets, kiddo, she will never divulge them. (In part because she may not realize just how good she has it.) ] It'll finish soon.

[ ....She hopes. Where do they all come from, anyway. ]

[That wasn't even asking for secrets-- that was just starting conversation, like any polite and friendly soul.

Not that she didn't have secrets of her own.]

I hope you're right, [She said, standing on the tips of her toes and lifting a hand to shield her face from any incoming little bats.]

Don't think I've ever seen a swarm like this in my life! But, they say Refuge is a special place. What, with the Litwicks and everything.

You're interested in Pokémon?

[ Since far as she knows, the major time Litwick do something of interest is the Shattering, which - while an event she has been to and enjoyed, as much as anyone can be said to "enjoy" someone else's memorial service - has already happened this year.

She also lived with a Litwick for a while, but she'd rather not think about that. ]

[The small nerd grabbed onto Rover to pull him clear of a stream of zubats, earning a surprised buzz from the pokemon.]

Who isn't interested? Really?

[The Litwicks were just one part of her expedition-- but it was also the easiest to explain. why not roll with it? ]

[ Natural curiosity. That's adorable. Haruka smiles, then looks down the tunnel. Her eyebrows crease, then relax. ] Almost done.

[ And, true to form, the swarm does begin lightening. Now it is mostly older Zubat, gamely flapping along as best they can, and families guiding tiny Zubat. Fly this way. This way. ]

[And, much to the shorty's surprise, the stranger was right. Cue a look of awed surprise at this graceful creature who seemed to be masquerading in human form.]

Wow, you're really good. [She said mildly, letting go of the Magnemite so it could float around and shine a light deeper into the caverns, just to double check.]

Looks like you're more than just a passing stranger, then. Sorry for being rude.

[ Haruka shrugs. Her Psychic typing is so mild it's really only good for stuff like this.

That, and her instincts aren't bad. She grins. ] Take a right the next time the cave forks. You'll run into more Pokémon that way.

[ The left is a residential district. The only Pokémon there are ones who have found human families to join. ]

Actually~ the Pokemon were just one part of what I'm doing out here. [She eyed the stranger, wondering just how much this person could guess at.] It's getting pretty late, and I'm not exactly prepared for camping underground.

Then, should we head back together? [ Haruka frowns, concerned. ] Sorry if I held you up.

[ Wasn't any of her business anyway....she needs to make this up somehow. That is Her Way. ]

Nah, it's fine!

[Don't give her that concerned look, she did nothing to deserve it!]

Sometimes travel is more fun when you're meeting new people like this. I don't wanna be a bother for you!

[ Haruka shrugs off this concern about, well, her concern. ] I'm heading that way anyway. You from Union?

[ Granted, there are lots of possibilities. Intellectual tends to run in Sanctuary. Fearless tends to run in Caldera and Citadel.

But cute? Union has the market on cute. It seems to be gathering all the cute from all the different cities. Must be the idealistic streak.

So she's fairly secure in her guess. ]

[It was a very good guess, had circumstances not been as they were. Pidge's eyes widened for a second in surprise before abruptly looking away.]

Ah. Actually, I'm from the west coast of the continent.

[The words were chosen carefully. Though she hadn't been in the city for some time because of her personal search, she had heard enough of the rumors and the news to know that her town and Union weren't necessarily on friendly terms.]

Though I might end up passing through there one day. I hear there's stuff going on in the East that might be worth looking into some day. With just the three of us, though, travel's not gonna be that fast.

[ ....Ah. Haruka closes her mouth, nodding. She's not getting a suspicious vibe off this person, and she'd seen enough of that city to know there were plenty of people just living their lives there, same as anywhere else. But these are tense times. And she doesn't trust easily. ] I would steer clear for now.

[ For everybody's sake. Haruka is not leading a Gigan, even a civilian, to Union - just in case. And an innocent civilian has no business being in the city their own hometown is about to invade.

Maybe holing up in Refuge wouldn't be such a bad idea, after all. ] Can I at least lead you back to your camp?

[The responce earned a frustrated sigh from the young explorer, and she seemed to visibly deflate at those words.]

I thought you'd say something like that, [she mumbled, irritably removing her hood and readjusting her glasses so the stranger could see her face fully.]

Look-- I've been out for a while, so I don't know how bad things are. If you're saying it's bad though, it might be best to just wait things out here.

[The frustration was palpable in her voice.]

[ ...if that's true, this person doesn't know about the Emperor, either. That had been a secret from Gigas at large.

And Haruka is not going to be the one to have that discussion. But she does need to stress the danger, so: ] We're at war.

[ It's said with no particular bias towards this specific Gigan, at least. On the other hand, it's said with a total lack of inflection whatsoever. Just a fact. The cold, hard fact.

She is nothing if not cool. ]

War?

[Those eyes widened again, this time flashing with anxiety and fear.]

Oh, no. No, no, no. That can't be-- not now!

[She shook her head rapidly before taking a step closer to the stranger, now seeming more determined than ever.]

I can't stay if it's war, because they're still out there. My Dad and brother-- I've gotta find them!

[ All of which is both very distressing and, unfortunately, not Haruka's cross to bear. She takes a step away to illustrate this.

Metaphors. It's what ~~cousbians~~ ~~shiny humans~~ ~~horrible people~~ actors do. ]

The battling hasn't started yet. But there's very few safe places left.

[ Her eyes narrow. ] This might be one of them.

[ Hint. Hint. ]
