Welcome to

When creating a thread, it is advised that players give their prospective thread partners a bit of information in the subject line, such as the characters name and canon, or a possible typing and Enlightened ability (if this is applicable). These are not required, but will make it easier for any prospective players to thread with you. While not required, we also encourage you to take a look at the most recent AU Planning post.
THIS CYCLE'S PROMPTS
#1 Summer means it's time for a vacation! You and your Pokémon have hit the beach only to discover that not only has everyone else had the exact same idea, there's a bullying Raichu and Snubbull wandering around stepping on people's sandcastles! Will you stand up to them or let the squabble pass you by?
#2 A Noctowl has delivered you a message inviting you to enroll in Sanctuary's "Spoinkwarts School of Magecraft". How will you respond? If you say yes, you'd better head there for your supplies....it's doubtful you're able to buy cauldrons and Swellow-feather quills in Union.
#3 Perhaps it's time to beat the heat by heading to Refuge. But you've ventured there as evening is falling, and that can only mean one things: Zubats. Zubats everywhere. All at once. Suddenly. There is no escape, there is no release. There is only Zubat, and this cave.
#4 Aggron from the northern mountains have discovered Glacier music and are trying it out for themselves! Unfortunately, the only parts they've mastered are the grunting, yelling, and whipping their heads (and tails) around violently. Enjoy the concert!
#5 The Verdant Forest is full of pollen this time of year! And it looks like this Petilil that won't stop following you is allergic to....itself. It's also giving off pollen. Everywhere. Seriously, even if you don't have allergies, you're in trouble.
#6 Wildcard! Come up with your own prompt!
If you have any setting questions, or want to do some reading before posting a thread, you can find the setting directory here! Happy tagging!
Shizuru Fujino | Mai-HiME
[ Shizuru has been ignoring the bullies, for the most part. She's preferring to lie on her stomach beneath an umbrella, her Deino waving a fan to keep them cool.
But she also seems to have fallen asleep. And her skin is starting to look a bit pink. ]
[ 3 ]
Oh, dear...
[ Shizuru holds up an arm to shield her face as bats come flying at it. A glance over to notice she's got company, and then she's taking one step ahead. ] Popular spot, isn't it?
Kanade Amou | Senki Zesshou Symphogear
Whoooo!!
[ Someone at this concert is getting really into it. In fact, after making her way to the front of the audience, she's pumping her fists and jumping up and down. ] That's the -
[ Whoa, she has to dodge a tail. And that has her falling sideways. Towards you.
Hi! ]
[ 5 ]
Ahhhhhhh-choo!!
[ A flock of Pidove take flight as Kanade rubs her nose, then wipes it on her arm. A Miltank at her side shakes its head, then reaches into a pack on Kanade's hip to try and find a handkerchief. ] You're quite the potent little kiddo, huh.
5
If your sneezing doesn't get better we're stopping for awhile to rest.
[ Not even Kanade can escape momcat mode. ]
does catmom only have like. magikarp and other pokemon of equivalent ferocity
Wow rude, her team would be made of igglybuffs
i stand corrected
you can't win if it's not cute
incidentally bnw is full of ways to be a sketchy science experiment. just sayin'
4
A pair of strong hands caught the young woman before she toppled over and fell into the stomping, flailing mess of the impromptu moshpit that was populated by pokemon and human alike. Someone on the ground could easily be trampled to death and no one would notice until after the concert was long over...
But, wasn't that kind of the point of death metal?]
Watch yourself, [he said, firmly holding onto her until she found her feet again. They were close enough that some women would think that he was coming onto them...though there was a certain crispness in his tone that indicated that he wasn't even close to thinking on that level.
Had their nigh intimate proximity not dawned on him at all?]

Ichimatsu Matsuno | Osomatsu-san
[This was not what he asked for. And, frankly, Ichimatsu was more interested in talking to the Delivery Noctowl (who had little to actually say besides the cryptic retort of 'Magus Business') than the letter itself.
His irritation at being brushed off like that, though....
Cue Ichimatsu in some backalley, somewhere in Union burning the letter. How he got the means of lighting it remained to be seen-- the little Eevee riding in back of his hoodie offered no answer.
There was a gleam of disdain in his eyes as he watched the flickering ashes drift off on the wind.]
5
[Not even the protective mask he wore over his mouth and nose could protect him from the overwhelming pollen from the little flock of Petilils that had gathered around him in the park. Every few minutes his quiet, comfortable commune was interrupted by a violent sounding sneeze-- but he quickly moved to settle down any worried little pokemon with a shushing noise and a gentle touch on it's head.
He was so going to regret this later, but being covered in loveable flower buds was so worth it.]
Wildcard!
[Bring your own prompt!]
2
[ Kanade is standing in the mouth of this alleyway, her hip cocked to one side. She's tapping an identical letter against her shoulder. ] What if you buy a silver cauldron when they told us pewter? You really gotta learn to plan for the future.

This isn't a usual action for her, yet Maka isn't concerned when she notices her partner Pokemon missing, she just...sighs.]
Not again.
[Not again. Yep, for maybe the third time this month Maka's going over to the alleyway with her shiny Ralts in tow to look for Stella. One might think--well--Maka originally found Stella in the alley, so naturally it'd be a place Stella finds comfortable.
They'd be wrong, it's because of the man in the alley surrounded by cat Pokemon, Stella along with them. No clue how it happened or why, but this misanthropic fellow (apparently the fourth son out of six) has a natural draw towards Pokemon--cat like ones in particular.]
Mr. Matsuno...please give back Stella.
[Yet despite them both being Kindred Souls Maka still has no clue how exactly to approach him and is forced to default to "be polite even though he's a weird adult".]
Genji | Overwatch
[There's a stranger out on the beach today, one that seems oddly overdressed for the warm weather in a cloak and wide-brimmed straw hat concealing his features. He's not taking part in any particular beach-related activities, apparently content to sit on a high outcropping and watch the waves crash in peace.
At least until the Snubbul and Raichu make a move, lunging out toward a sunbather with the wicked intent. Only to come up short with a squeak of surprise each and drop back as three shurikens strike the ground in their path.]
It is very rude to disturb a person's rest. [The stranger speaks in an odd, electronically modified voice, and there's a glint of metal as a hand withdraws beneath his cloak.] Run along and find a better way to spend your day.
[Hopping back up the two Pokemon make a beeline away from the stranger, who simply chuckles quietly and goes back to watching the sea.]
3
[The caves of Refuge are quite a sight, and while the heat didn't bother the modified ninja it was still something he'd wanted to see when the opportunity arose and the dark caves were like home to him, enough that he could move around without need of a torch or any light source. Still, he could have done without so many Zubats.
The little Pokemon weren't dangerous enough that he needed to strike back against them, but they were quite numerous and quite irritating. Ducking aside from a new swarm, he stood out of their path as they passed him by and sighed lightly.]
This is not quite what I had expected.
6
Obligatory open to anything else you might want option. Run into Genji anywhere.

[ From behind, there's a rumble from an Ivysaur. He can do that too. That's not impressive at all.
There follows a flash of green, before three large leaves dig into the sand next to the shuriken.
Beside him, the Leafeon lifts a paw and covers her muzzle, hiding what is likely a smile. A move not unlike their trainer, in terms of manners. Before she rises up onto her feet, and daintily minces across the sands towards Genji, her leaf tail waving back and forth in greeting. ]

[Hinahoho had seen it all-- and had been planning to do something about it as well, if not for his runaway little swinub deciding that it was the perfect time to take a dive into the balmy sea. Climbing up onto the rocky outcropping with the swinub now perched on his massive shoulders, he wrung the excess seawater from his voluminous ponytail and joined the odd man. His height towered over most of the rest of the beachgoers, but there was nothing but good will in that smile.]
It was subtle, too. I'd have brought my spear out or sent Rolo after them.

Shuuya Kano | Kagerou Project | Zorua Shifter
[Though the Snubbull and Raichu pair seem to be getting their kicks tearing down other peoples' beautiful sand creations, they're staying away from this one... more extravagant castle. It seems like it'd be the perfect target, right? But the last time they tried to kick it, it didn't quite seem to work.
In fact, if anybody comes up near it, the whole thing doesn't seem... exactly real. And trying to touch it causes hands and feet to just waver right through it like a mirage.
Anybody that ends up confused might hear some muffled snickering coming from under a nearby umbrella, its sole occupant this one kid who's wearing a hoodie and jeans, even in the middle of the summer.]
[5]
Go away.
[Kano isn't allergic to pollen, really. But he's getting pretty annoyed at the little Pokemon that's been following him for way, way too long.
This is about the 28th time he's tried the "go away" tactic. Coincidentally, it's the 28th time that it hasn't worked. He's also tried the "go away go away go away" tactic, the "seriously stop following me" tactic, and the "I'm not paying attention to you so maybe that'll get you to go away" tactic. None of them have worked.
At this point, he's seriously considering a more physical tactic to get the Petilil to stop following him. Maybe some intervention might be nice before he comes to blows with an innocent Pokemon.]
[6]
[Wildcard! Bring your own prompt; Kano's open to be pretty much anywhere.]

Instantly, his eyes fall on the kid underneath the umbrella, and he flies away from Haruka's side, landing near the kid and glaring at him. Haruka and Blossom haven't seemed to notice yet.]

[ Ken, coming up behind this young man, looks surprised. He hasn't even spoken up yet...and he's already being told to go away...?
The Weedle in his arms sneezes. Something in this area is giving off pollen. ]
Hinahoho | Magi: Sinbad no Bouken | Glacier Native
[The cloying darkness and chill of the labyrinthine caverns of Refuge was a welcome relief from the unbearable heat that existed south of the tundra. Most humans would be glad for the heat, but for Hinahoho it only made him want to sleep until darkness fell-- or find the nearest, coldest natural spring in the area and dive in.]
Phew, [He said, removing the hood of his cloak and brushing his thick fringe, sticky with sweat, from his brow. The little Swinub on his shoulder nudged his cheek with her nose, chittering happily. The mountains would be better than this, but a new place to explore was always a good thing.]
I heard there was a village down here, [Hina said, lifting a massive hand to gently scratch the tiny pokemon on the head with equal affection.] Let's see if we can find it-- the drinks there are supposed to rival the ones back home.
[Except...they wouldn't make it far. The darkness around them invited only one thing: zubats. Hoards of them. Both giant man and pokemon alike shouted in surprise when the zubats stormed them.
Someone, help?]
4
[Now this was a show Hina could get into. Words weren't always necesary for good, rough and tumble metal to express it's meaning-- and the meaning was loud and clear. These Aggron must have had stories to tell that rivalled those of the clan Elders, who fought Gyarados with only a single spear and took them down in one blow, or those energetic drunkards who lost bets and had to battle wild beartics naked, with just their bare hands as their only strength.
Hina was grinning, and the swinub upon his head was wooping and cheering in time with the music. It's impossible to miss him even in this crowd-- standing heads above the rest of the humans, with a build only rivalled by those very beartics that roamed the frosted mountains.
This was a taste of home, and he loved it.]
4
He succeeded... somewhat, which leads to him getting crowdsurfed, bouncing from one to another]
Whoa!

Ken Ichijouji | Digimon Adventure 02
Y-
[ Oh dear. Maybe he's putting himself where he isn't wanted. Maybe he's being a bother. But Ken had made a promise to himself, and to his Pokémon, upon obtaining a Warp Band. He'd promised them that he'd become someone worthy of their loyalty, face his weaknesses, and move forward into the future. And that apparently means standing between Raichu, Snubbull, and this little girl's sandcastle. His fists are trembling, but they're clenched. And he's not budging. ]
Y-you shouldn't do that. Why would you? What purpose does it serve?
[ Raichu and Snubbull exchange a glance, then shrug. Raichu sparks a little. Purpose? It's FUN! What more purpose do they need!
Ken's teeth grit, but he appears to be in a pinch. ]
[ 3 ]
Agh -
[ If you can see through the Zubat swarm, there is a small child caught up in it. A small child trying to fight his way, step by step, through it. And now - there is a Weedle being borne up, up, and away... ]
--Wormmon!
[ 5 ]
Are you lost?
[ Ken crouches to speak to Petilil. His nose is running, but he's trying to motor through that, listening as it makes some bashful meeping noises. ] I see. The forest does look different when everything's in bloom, doesn't it?
[ More meeping. More nodding. Ken picks Petilil up and begins walking. ] Speak up if you recognize something, all right?
[ And yet, the later you encounter them....the more lost they're both going to seem. ]
1
[Soaking wet and silent as the sea before a storm, Hinahoho stalked up behind the young boy, the little girl, and the sandcastle that appeared to be in danger. Had the sun been anywhere but near the horizon, his shadow would have loomed upon them all when he approached.
But-- this was fine. Baring his teeth in what could only be called a grin by definition alone, his eyes glinted with something feral as he stared down the two bullies.
You wanna pick a fight with the kids? Go ahead.
You'll need to face him as well.]

Haruka Haruno | Go! Princess Precure
Haruka sighed to herself as she sat out in the middle of the street, sitting behind a stand that had been set up earlier in the day. A sign advertising her family's sweets shop was hanging over her head, and a number of free samples for the purposes of promotion were sitting in front of her. Haruka was, herself, doing her best to appear friendly and excited - it was, after all, her job to sit out and advertise today.
Of course, there were things she wished she was doing otherwise. Being enlightened meant there were now adventures, new possibilities open to her. But right now, she had a responsibility to her family and their business, and she couldn't simply walk away from that. At the same time however, things were slow, and thus, she couldn't exactly keep her mind from wandering, either.
Thus, as it turned out, she was sitting there, a dreamy look on her face, looking like her thoughts were a million miles away.
voicetesting of sorts; i'm so sorry in advance about this canonpoint
Normally Ken would just step aside - it's nothing to him if one of the bugs on the pavement is squatting in a larger space than necessary. But his family's recent move from Sanctuary to Union has thoroughly disrupted his plans for secret domination of the area's Pokémon, and it's taking him longer than anticipated to reestablish a band of stolen slaves. The Pokémon here all like and trust their humans so much. They expect to be treated as equals.
It's sickening.
So perhaps this is petty. Beneath him, really. But it'll make him feel better, so Ken dons his best polite, bland, unassuming-boy-genius demeanor and smiles at the girl. ] Excuse me. You're blocking traffic.

Are you getting fitted for Spoinkwarts too?
[ The boy who's smiling over at you from where he's getting a custom-made Mage's robe draped on his body by a fussy shopkeeper has noticed the letter you're carrying. ] That's a relief. I thought I wouldn't know anyone once I moved back to Sanctuary.
[ These robes are, somewhat presumptuously, trimmed with green and silver. ]
[ 3 ]
Hm.
[ A young boy walks right past you right into the Zubat swarm. By careful dodging and side-stepping, he manages to get through the chaos without ending up with a bat in his face. All completely casually. His hands are still in his pockets.
He even sighs a little when he reaches the mouth of the cave. Too easy, really. for a genius.
Like him. ]
[ 5 ]
You're making me sneeze.
[ Not to mention disturbing Ken's assessment of this forest. The area around Union is quite different from Sanctuary. He's going to have to take that into account for any future plans.
And this stupid creature has had the nerve to actually hop up to his ankle. But that just puts it in an ideal position, doesn't it?
Petilil has flown halfway across the clearing, squeaking, by the time Ken's foot hits the grass again. Wastes of space without brains can't be reasoned with. They can only be conditioned.
That should put it in its place. ]

Aila Jyrkiäinen | Gundam Build Fighters
Aila felt like she stuck out like a sore thumb. She was one of the few people on the beach not dressed for the occasion, as she was just standing there, off away from other people in garb that included a fur-lined collar and hat. Considering the time of year and the fact this was the beach, you'd think she'd be rather hot dressed like that.
You'd think, certainly. Maybe she was fine with being hot. Maybe her enlightened abilities made it so the heat wasn't any concern. Or maybe the Vanillite at her side was keeping her cool somehow. There were possibilities, certainly.
But all in all, she seemed to be focused on observing people. Watching. Looking like she was thinking about what she was seeing. What she wasn't doing, however, was having fun, unlike everyone else who had come out here. She simply continued hovering on the periphery, a sour look on her face as she looked on, never being a part of anything.
What was a girl like this doing here?
[Used the setting of the first prompt without so much the details; I hope that's okay.]
[6]
That stoic girl who kept to herself at the beach? Didn't talk much? Seemed to be focused on watching people? Well, now she's in a restaurant in the heart of Union, and... well, she might as well be a different person.
There was wide, happy smile on Aila's face as she sat at her table, which was covered with food. The phrase "one of everything" might well have applied, though it's hard to tell the way she was going at it. The dish she was currently enjoying? A dessert, which seemed to be making her Vanillite particularly uncomfortable.
After a few minutes, Aila finished, and let out a happy, satisfied sigh. "Isn't this all so good, Vanillite?" she says, with a bit of chocolate at the corner of her mouth. The Ice-type Pokemon simply looked at her with a dull, unamused look, before handing her a slip of paper... which happened to be their bill.
Aila took it, and... she froze. Seeing the price, the girl's expression changed from one of happiness to one of fear and urgency, and she instantly pulled out a money purse and began to check through her funds. Judging by the sound she made... what she discovered there was not at all reassuring.
6
She didn't stare much though, and went about her meal. She was finishing up, bowing and thanking the waiter gratefully when she heard the rattling from Aila's purse and at the sound from her, Minami looked over. While it may be a bit beyond her responsibility to do so, she took a few steps over towards her.
"Ah, are you quite all right, Miss?"

Pidge Gunderson | Voltron | FFO Engineer
[Even a trip to the beach wouldn't keep the smol nerd out of her oversized jacket and hiking boots, furiously scratching away on a pad of paper while she observed the beach goers from behind her glistening round glasses. A travel log seemed appropos for her current situation, and she wasn't planning on missing a second of it if she could.
But, that blasted Raichu and Snubbull...
Heaving an irritated sigh, Pidge smacked her book shut and tucked her pen behind an ear, before crawling up onto the nearest (and biggest) rock she could find to stare own at the bullies.]
Hey! [She called, with astonishingly loud cadence for someone so small. The little Emolga she had picked up along the way sat clung to her head, cheeks sparking with energy in sympathetic outrage, and her trusted Magnemite floated ominously nearby-- ostensibly on standby.]
How 'bout you leave the kid alone and pick on someone your own size?!
3
Oh, these zubats!
[Pidge pulled the brim of her bucket hat tighter over her head and pushed her glasses up on her face as she trudged forth, mud from the forest trail caked on her boots and splattered on her bare leg as she marched forth. There was no way that a swarm of these pests was going to keep her out of Refuge, not when she was so sure that a clue to her personal quest was in there.
Still, it was so tempting to hitch a ride through this mess.]
Hey, Rover. [She glanced up at her trusty tail of a Magnemite, and tucked her Emolga into her jacket so that the little pokemon wouldn't get lost. A sly grin spread across her face as she regarded her companion.]
You ready to get outta here?
[At the Magnemite's beep of confirmation, Pidge grabbed onto her companion's arms and they took off, top speed, through the storm.
Her excited cheer could be heard echoing through the forests and the caverns.]
no subject
Somebody was headed out the same time Pidge was headed in. One long arm's raised to block bats from hitting her, but aside from that Haruka doesn't look overly bothered.
She also has to sidestep to avoid a collision, waiting until the last possible second to move. ] Is it really that bad...

Elaine Mallory | The Dresden Files
#3: IT'S A ZUBAAAAT-- *explosions* *Gundam Wing music*
With sundown, the stifling summer heat was softened by cool evening breezes. It was the time of day that Elaine enjoyed the most, and the fading rays of the sun lit the gold highlights of her wheat brown hair. Her jeans and sandals bore dusty patches from the long journey down the winding road, as did the lower edge and cuffs of the flannel tied around her waist. Her long hair was loosely pinned up in a (French?) twist, a few loose strands trailing down the nape of her neck and brushing the high cheekbones of her angular face.
Elaine made for a pleasant enough travel companion. Her manner was easy and free, her smiles were frequent and natural, and it was clear to those who traveled with her that she possessed a fairly sharp wit to boot.
Uncapping her water bottle, she tipped her head back and took several deep swallows before dribbling a little on her hands before rubbing them briskly together. The long journey seems to have left dust even in the most unlikely of places, and she was looking forward to reaching Refuge to treat herself to a long soak in the bath.
And then there were Zubats.
The first swooped low, clipping the crown of Elaine's hair with its wing. Her head jerked forward as her jaw dropped in silent surprise. She barely had a chance to look back and see what hit her before another swooped in. Elaine ducked, instinctively covering her head, and before she knew it, she and her travel companion were racing for the caves for shelter.
Once they were safe, Elaine's back dragged against the stony wall as she slid to sit, laughing breathlessly as she stretcher her long, coltish legs in front of her. "Correct me if I'm wrong," she smiled, green eyes twinkling in the dim light, "but don't Zubats typically make their homes in a cave?" If so, this wasn't going to be the best place in the world to avoid them. Still, it was cool and quiet, and a pleasant respite for the time being. She had no objections to setting up camp here for the night.
-----------------------
Wildcard: Healing Touch
[Whether it's the trainer or the Pokemon in need of a massage, Elaine is a master at administrating her skills to all. The patient is allowed to rest in her lap if it's a Pokemon, or to make themselves comfortable on some sort of flat surface. Her cool fingertips work slow, firm circles into the patient's temples, then brush soothingly down the sides of the throat. She's gentle, applying just the right amount of pressure to be felt, neither so light as to be ticklish nor so firm to cause discomfort.]
[Her breathing is deep and even as she works, the light scent of the forest clinging to her warmth. Once the patient seems to relax, Elaine's generous mouth curves into a smile.]
How is it? Better?
[She's studied reiki techniques for years, familiarizing herself with the pressure points of the body and transferring her own energy through her expert touch.]
wildcard!
[ Elaine has a happy Jolteon propped up in her lap. A very, very happy Jolteon. Who grins a big doggy smile up, sparking slightly.
Off to one side, his Trainer forces back a slight wince from where she's just hanging out, trying not to get in the way. ] He gets charged up pretty easily. Is that something this can help?
[ ...without electrocuting the massage therapist? ]

Archnemon | Digimon Adventure 02
[She had only come out here to observe, and she already hated it.
The sun was too hot. The breeze was too salty. And the noise levels were practically intolerable. It was a wonder that she was able to find herself a spot to stand among the larger rocks, too close to the ocean for her liking but far enough out of the way of those rambunctious pokemon. Who were only adding to her growing irritation.
As well as a beach ball flying in her direction out of nowhere, which nearly causes her to lose her balance on the rock. Furious, she responds by hitting it in another direction entirely, not even watching to see where it lands. She certainly didn't care.]

[The forest is much more comfortable, despite the unfortunate allergens the pokemon seem to be carrying. She can find a spot to sit in with ease, and even take her flute out for a while to play...
... but unfortunately, her music seems to have brought out a little audience, including the Pollen-culprit. Which she almost doesn't mind, until ...]
I swear. If you can't stop sneezing, you should all just go somewhere else instead of interrupting me.

[The problem with arriving in a new city was not knowing where the best places were to eat around town.
And advertised menus with unfamiliar food items.
She's standing outside one of Union's "traditional" restaurants with a slightly wary expression. It wasn't a big deal, or shouldn't have been, but she had never seen so much pasta and vegetables before...
But she doesn't want to ask for help either. So she's standing there, mad at herself for just not deciding already.]
6 - follow-up to my testdrive
So when he notices the woman who'd pestered him while he was hunting Pokémon earlier, he figures he may as well have some fun. He'd been in disguise out in the forest, after all - mask, Mage robes, and the strange way his hair sticks up when he's using his powers (a side effect not worth pondering). Plain, modest boy genius Ken Ichijouji has never met this woman before.
And therefore is free to speak with her pleasantly. ] There's a lot to pick from, isn't there? It must be confusing.
[ No guile in this smile. He is just a passing boy who wishes to help his elders! His poor, baffled elders. Lucky you. ]

All Might (Toshinori Yagi) | My Hero Academia
[There are some sights that are so beautiful that they can bring a tear to a man's eyes. This is one of those sights for All Might. It doesn't matter if that the Aggron don't quite have all the steps down perfectly. The attempt is admirable and it's an amazing display.
So amazing that even the mighty All Might has to join in, grunting, stomping his feet, and flexing his massive muscles.
...The only problem is that he's in the crowd. Watch out for those feet!]
3.
[There was a rumor in glacier that All Might had never been bothered by Zubats in a cave. They knew simply knew better. He kind of wished that there was some truth to that one right about now.
He had used up most of his strength getting as far as he had. Now the husk of a man that was Toshinori flung his arms weakly to deter another Zubat from flying into face. He let out an exhausted breath and promptly fell to the ground once it flew away.]
Hooooo boy... I think I'm getting to old for this.

[There was a tiny sassypants explorer who had been stuck in these caverns for a little too long, and the dark passages littered with zubats were becoming tiresome. Skidding to a stop near the rakish man, her boots kicking up dust behind her, Pidge glanced behind her and threw the stranger a grin.]
